WhatsApp for B2B Outreach: When It Works
In some markets the decision maker answers WhatsApp before email. When to use it, what to send and the rules to respect.
In many markets, business runs on WhatsApp. Small company owners list a WhatsApp number on their website, answer customers there and reply to suppliers there long before they open email. In those markets, ignoring WhatsApp means ignoring the channel your decision makerDecision makerThe person who can say yes to a purchase, or block it. actually reads.
In other markets, an unexpected WhatsApp message from a stranger feels intrusive. Knowing the difference is most of the skill.
When WhatsApp works
- The company publishes a WhatsApp number on its website or listings. That is an invitation.
- The company is small, and the owner handles messages personally.
- The market uses WhatsApp for business, which is common across much of Latin America, Southern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South Asia.
- You have a reason to be brief. WhatsApp suits a short question, not a pitch.
When to avoid it
- The only number you have is a personal mobile you found elsewhere.
- The company is large and has formal procurement.
- Local rules require prior consent for business messages.
- You have already contacted them on two other channels this week.
Rules to respect
- Use the number they published for business, never a personal one you found elsewhere.
- Identify yourself and your company in the first message.
- Stop immediately if they ask, and add them to your suppression listSuppression listContacts who must never be contacted again, such as people who opted out or bounced..
- Do not automate bulk sends. WhatsApp limits and bans accounts that do.
- Check local law. Rules on unsolicited business messages vary by country.
